Wow. Great post. Frustrating as hell, too. The ‘algorithmic Republic’ sounds very intriguing and worth developing. I’m not one to freeze. One time when in a mgmt position, the main boss was proposing layoffs to meet budget and gain bonuses. It was pre-Christmas holiday period. I suggested instead that everyone maybe take a very small pay cut, and no layoffs and meet budget/gain bonuses. I thought it more fun than the dredges of layoffs in the holidays. Not just for those laid off, but for those still working without their co-workers. How sucky!! No one agreed with me. I am not anti-capitalism nor socialist at all. I was trying to solve the problem without hurting families or individuals, primarily to keep employees proud of the company, particularly at what is supposed to be a joyful time. I’m going to have to catch up to your past posts on this concept. Thank you!

If you look at my stickies post “introduction to a boring utopia” it lays out the whole thing. And good on you for speaking up! Unless there are clear underperformers (who should be on a clear escalation paths that leads to reform or termination where the employee knows exactly what to expect) then what you suggested makes sense and shows great leadership. Sorry you got jumped on.

Wow again. You know what? No one ever interpreted that story I just told you as 'great leadership'. And it WAS. I just saw that. Now, almost 30 yrs later. It tells me a lot about the focus of leadership, what it means, and what TRUE integrity means. Thanks again and I'll check out where you pointed me.

Yeah I’m not much of a one to try to be the “most” at something. Unless I’m doing something fundamentally damaging to the business (which can be an easy thing to do) I think looking after people is the highest good. And if someone is messing up it’s best to meet with them long before budget time and figure that out.
